St Clair Revitalization Project
Building on Past Community Successes
Community involvement is essential to the successful implementation of the revitalization plan. One of the great strengths of the St. Clair West community is the high level of citizen participation. Three Business Improvement Areas (BIA's), ratepayer groups, two Police Community Partnerships and a network of volunteer groups represent the area's interests.
Over the years, the BIA's have initiated projects that improved physical infrastructure, such as the Corso Italia's Commercial Area Improvement Plan. In addition, the BIA's have hosted a number of community events, such as the Toronto Fiesta and Winterfest, that have become annual traditions and a source of community pride.
The Joseph J. Piccininni Community Centre recently inaugurated a "Youth Centre", the first ever of this kind in the city of Toronto. The youth centre will provide space for teens.
The Police Community Partnerships with 12 and 13 Divisions (PCP's), and The Crime Task Force in the area have been instrumental in improving the quality of life in the area. The PCP's have brought the Community, The Toronto Police Services and Government Agencies together to address safety issues, target problem areas and reduce crime
Community Consultation The St. Clair West Revitalization Committee (SCWRC) is composed of residents and business people; it was formed in July 2001 and held monthly meetings to guide the development of Our Future Together. In October 2001, the SCWRC articulated the following revitalization goals:
Improve community connections between the economic, social, physical and environmental components of the area.
Create an identity for the community as an important employment, commercial, and cultural area within the City of Toronto.
Encourage a diverse and interesting mix of retail along St. Clair that serves both local and regional markets.
Create an attractive and safe public realm. Starting in February 2002, five focus group meetings were held with representatives from industry, retail, social services, the arts and youth. The meetings provided valuable anecdotal information on the state of the community, as well as its member's desires for the future. Finally, on March 12th, 2002 a public forum was held to update the community on the SCWRC progress, and to solicit ideas for revitalization actions.
